Window Air Conditioner

The most commonly used air conditioner for single rooms is Window air conditioner. This air conditioner comprises of different components - compressor, condenser, expansion valve or coil, evaporator and cooling coil – these all are enclosed in a single box. Window Air Conditioner is fitted more commonly a window sill or in a slot made in the wall of the room.

Windows air conditioners are the simplest form of the air conditioning systems and one of the most widely used types of air conditioners. All the parts of the window air conditioner are assembled on rigid base of the air conditioner. The cage is fitted into the wall or the window of the room in which the air conditioner is required.

The whole assembly of the window air conditioner can be divided into two compartments - the outdoor side from where the heat absorbed by the room air is liberated to the atmosphere and the room side, which is also the cooling side.

The various parts of the window air conditioner can be divided into following categories: air circulation system, the refrigeration system, ventilation system, the electrical protection system and control system.

• Split Air Conditioner:

  As the name derives the split air conditioner comprises of two parts - the outdoor unit which is fitted outside the room, houses and the indoor unit fitted inside the room, houses. The outdoor unit comprises of components like the compressor, condenser and expansion valve. The indoor unit includes the evaporator or cooling coil and the cooling fan. A split air conditioner is commonly used to cool one or two rooms.

• Evaporator Coil or the Cooling Coil:

  It is a copper coil covered with aluminium fins. It is made of number turns depending on the capacity of the air conditioning system. The aluminium coating helps in transferring the maximum heat and maintains the desired temperature.

• Air Filter:

  The air filter removes all the dirt particles from the room air and is placed just before the cooling coil. It helps supplying clean air to the room.

• Cooling Fan or Blower:

  Cooling Fan or blower sucks the room air or the atmospheric air. It helps to reduce the temperature of the air and removes all the dirt from the air.

• Drain Pipe:

  When the room air is passed over the cooling due the suction force of the blower, it reaches levels below its dew point temperature. There air conditioners need a drain pipe

• Louvers or Fins

  The cool air supplied by the blower is passed into the room through louvers. As per the requirements, louver supplies cool air and also helps changing the angle or direction in which the air needs to be supplied into the room.

Packaged Air Conditioner

If you want to cool more than two rooms or a larger space at your home or office, an HVAC designer will suggest this type of air conditioner. There are two possible arrangements with the package unit. All Packaged Air Conditioner parts, are compressor, condenser (which can be air cooled or water cooled), expansion valve and evaporator are housed in a single box. Steps of the functioning of the Packaged Air Conditioner parts are –

• The high capacity blower thrown the cool air and it flows through the ducts laid through various rooms.
• In the next step, the compressor and condenser are housed in one casing.
• Then the compressed gas passes through individual units located in various rooms. This unit is comprised of the expansion valve and cooling coil.

Central Air Conditioning System

For cooling big buildings, houses, offices, entire hotels, gyms, movie theaters, factories etc, Central air conditioning is used. It is very expensive if you have to put individual units in each of the rooms so, HVAC designers go for Central Air Conditioners, if the whole building is to be air conditioned.
