In 1925, Richard and Donald Rheem (brothers) established the Rheem manufacturing company in Emeryville, CA. Over 100 years of its operation, it producing the number of products and supplies to the customers.

Rheem's product line includes heating, cooling, water heating, pool and spa heating, and commercial refrigeration units. It is the best manufacturer of water heating products in North America.

Along with the water heaters, the company manufactures heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Although, under Ruud's brand name, Rheem produces and sells its products.

The company started its growth as a supplier of packaging to the petroleum industry. It currently headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States.

Besides the US, Rheem Ruud supplying to various countries like Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bahrain, China, Brazil, Canada, Iraq, Kuwait, Mexico, New Zealand, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE, and Ukraine.

In 1931, Rheem acquired the John Wood Manufacturing Company which produced automatic gas storage water heaters. Later, it was expanded to Australia and at that time they began producing steel shipping containers including drums and water heaters.

However, the company became the largest manufacturer of automatic water heaters in the United States.

After a long time, in 1970, Rheem started making heat pumps and HVAC equipment for residential applications. This is the first company using the scroll compressors. So, all their air conditioning units and heat pumps use Copeland Scroll Compressors.

In 2009, Rheem and Ruud introduced the hybrid pump water heater which is more efficient than electric water heaters.

Rheem and Ruud both produce and sell a full line of residential and commercial heating and cooling products including efficiency gas furnaces, oil-fired furnaces, heat pumps, thermostats, air conditioners, air handlers, package units, and indoor air quality products such as media filters, UV lamps, and humidifiers.

In other countries, the Rheem and Ruud companies supply various types of water heating systems such as high-efficiency condensing water heaters, gas-fired tank storage, and tankless water heaters, solar water heaters and hybrid heat pump water heaters under the Rheem, Ruud, Richmond, Paloma, Solahart, Splendid, and GE brands.

It also sells Swimming pool-related products under the Rheem and Raypak names.
